Extra patrols hit highways in search of 'roadside killer'

DESOTO COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Authorities in Mississippi are searching for the so-called "Roadside Killer" and they believe robbery is the motive for two highway shootings.

Officers are increasing their visibility in hopes of finding the person responsible for the murders of two drivers in north Mississippi.

"We're trying to patrol the streets a lot more, back roads a little better, and keeping an eye out for anything suspicious," said Horn Lake Police Officer Brandon Hylander.

Both of the killer's victims are believed to have been randomly picked and possibly pulled over by the murderer using fake police lights in a Ford Crown Victoria.

It is a concern for drivers like Rickey Trimm, who is being very cautious.

"I make sure I'm aware of what's going on with my surroundings," said Trimm. "Making sure the car pulling you over is marked and if it's not, questioning it."

While some local law enforcement agencies are providing extra patrols along the highways, many others are becoming more visible by keeping a marked car present on the interstates especially at night when there is less traffic.

Also, officers who use unmarked cars are not necessary prohibited from making stops; however, they are strongly urged to use marked cars.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations has received hundreds of tips. They urge anyone with information to call the MBI or your local law enforcement agency.
