MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Relatives of the Mayes family are talking about Adam's past.
His brother, Johnny Lee Mayes, spoke to a newspaper in South Carolina. In the interview, he described his brother as a self-centered, egotistical, and controlling, according to goupstate.com.
"I always thought [Adam Mayes] was trouble and that it was just a matter of time before something bad would happen with him, but I never thought he would kill someone," he said.
Johnny Mayes lives in Cowpens, South Carolina, which is near Spartanburg. He said he hasn't had much contact with his parents or sibling since 1996. He says the family moved around a lot when he was a child.
"We moved around everywhere," he said. "That's why my brother has ties to places all over the country, because we lived sort of this nomadic lifestyle. I don't know why. We lived in the Carolinas for most of our lives. And I settled in Cowpens, and they moved to Tennessee."
He described his mother, Mary Frances Mayes, as "cruel" but did not think she would be capable of helping his brother in the murders or kidnappings. He said he remains shocked about all the allegations and hopes Adam is found soon.
"He could be anywhere, and somebody is going to have to put a stop to him," he said.
