ZACHARY, LA (WAFB) -
What can a brush and a little ink teach kids about another culture? Some Zachary students are learning about foreign lands through art.
Frances Hu was born in China. She's teaching Copper Mill fourth graders Chinese calligraphy. It's part of the school's effort to expose kids to different cultures through art.
"Eastern culture is different from western culture, so this is the start of learning the whole world is different," said Hu.
Tuesday, they learned two of the 5,000 characters Chinese children learn before they reach seventh grade.
"This isn't hard, but learning how to hold the chopsticks and the brush is kind of hard," said student Kobe Lucas.
It can be a messy art that comes easier to some than others, but Hu hopes it will inspire theses kids to keep writing and learning about people and places that are different.
"Show respect for, not laughing at other's people's language or culture," said Hu. "We can learn starting from language."
