Police: Impaired driver rear-ends officer, injuring him

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -

A police officer is injured and a woman faces several charges after a weekend crash.

The Denham Springs Police Department said Sgt. T. Delrie was sitting in his unit when a car driven by Ashley Covington, 32, slammed into the back of it.

The wreck happened on the Amite River Bridge just after midnight Sunday.

Investigators said Covington was impaired at the time of the accident.

She was booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center on the following charges:

  • Second offense DWI
  • First degree negligent injuring
  • Possession of Schedule IV CDS
  • Careless operation
  • Fugitive of 21st JDC for failure to appear

"The Friends of Denham Springs Police," a non-profit organization, is helping Delrie financially while he heals so he can get back to work as quickly as possible.

Denham springs police say a sergeant is injured...and a 32-year-old woman now faces a long list of charges..following a weekend accident.
