Tigers edge Georgia in series opener, 6-5

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Shortstop Austin Nola blasted a 2-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally No.3 LSU past Georgia 6-5 Friday night at Alex Box Stadium.

Jacoby Jones also homered and had two RBI as the Tigers improved to 34-9 and 13-6 in the SEC. The Tigers still trail No.1 Kentucky by one game in the overall SEC standings, after the Wildcats beat Vanderbilt 5-2.

Georgia (24-19, 8-11) touched LSU starter Kevin Gausman for ten hits and five runs in just six innings of work, but Chris Cotton and Nick Goody combined for three scoreless innings of relief. Cotton earned the pitching victory to improve to 5-0 and Goody picked up his eighth save.

Two of the Bulldogs' runs were unearned, as Tyler Hanover committed two errors. Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:30 Saturday night.
