LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Five people were taken to the hospital after a fire at 959 Charles St. in Germantown. Firefighters rescued an elderly man who uses a wheelchair, and a firefighter was taken to University Hospital for minor burns to his legs.
Lt. Carroll Haueter said the elderly man slipped and fell as he was trying to escape. Three others, including the man's son and the son's girlfriend and child, were able to escape without significant injuries. They were transported to University Hospital for evaluation. The elderly man was not in a wheelchair when he was rescued.
The fire broke out just after 4 a.m. Haueter said there is considerable damage to the house. Firefighters believe the fire started in the middle of the house on the first floor.
Haueter said no one in the house heard smoke detectors sounding. Investigators said they found two new smoke detectors inside the house, still in the boxes.
