Mistaken identity adds new twist to stabbing death

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A case of mistaken identity has added a bizarre twist after a Memphis woman was stabbed to death overnight.

Officers responded to an aggravated assault call to 714 Hazelwood just before 2 a.m. Sunday where a 43-year-old was stabbed to death.

Officers arrived on the scene and spoke to witnesses who said a 54-year-old man stabbed Latricia Jefferson with a knife and left the scene.

Jefferson was taken to the MED in critical condition where she later died.

Meanwhile, a case of mistaken identity related to this case has Latisha Boddie scratching her head as she tries to make sense of how it all happened.

Boddie said being mistaken for Jefferson has been nerve wracking.

"My sister had called me and said to me, 'Mom said you died,'" said Boddie.  "I'm like, huh?  I'm here lying on the couch, and I called my mom and all my family had already gotten together and called the funeral home to come get my body from the morgue."

Boddie said detectives told her mother she was dead and that Boddie's body was at the morgue.

"They said I got stabbed seven times and my boyfriend had followed me to my apartment and killed me," said Boddie.

The situation was made even worse when relatives saw Boddie's picture on television.

"All my family was saying it was on the news," said Boddie.  "The other news station had even put up my picture on the news saying I had passed away."

"I thought it was a joke, a cruel joke," said Boddie's close friend Tiffany Johnson.  "Then I was like, wait a minute, it must be some misunderstanding."

Boddie said she now wonders if Jefferson had been using an ID she lost months ago.

"I lost my ID like a year or two ago and I didn't care, the ID was ugly anyway," said Boddie.  "I guess she had recovered by ID and had been using my ID."

Boddie, her family, and friends are now breathing a sigh of relief.

"I'm just grateful she's alive and grateful she's here and we have another day to ride around and get it," said Johnson.

This is the second murder that has happened on Hazelwood Street recently.  Several weeks ago, 28-year-old Calvin Jefferson was found shot to death inside a parked car behind a home.
