LSU picks Jones as head coach

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Former LSU basketball player Johnny Jones has been hired by LSU to take over the job vacated by Trent Johnson, multiple sources confirm for WAFB-TV.

The North Texas coach for eleven years ranks second in school history for career victories and led the Mean Green to Sun Belt Tournament Title game appearances four of the last six years, plus a pair of NCAA Tournament bids.

Jones played on LSU's 1981 Final Four team and also served as a longtime assistant to head coach Dale Brown, before taking over a program that had won just 20 games in its four previous seasons combined.

Jones averaged 21 wins per year over the last six seasons, including a school-record 24 victories two years ago. Jones' up-tempo attack made North Texas the Sun Belt's highest scoring offense the last two years. Johnson left LSU a week ago to take the job at TCU.
