House committee discusses $9 billion DHH budget

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriations committee took the Secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals to task Monday.

DHH has a nearly $9 billion budget for fiscal year 2012-2013. This year's budget is nearly $700 million more than last year. "You say you want to keep up but you want to get ahead? I don't see that in this budget," said Chairman Jim Fannin (D) Jonesboro, "I see us getting further behind with this budget."

DHH Secretary Brian Greenstein says there are no frills in this budget. "We certainly did not come up with things that we considered optional," said Greenstein. "We put the budget together as elements that we needed to run our health care system."

Critics of the DHH budget say it's full of one-time money to pay reoccurring expenses; plus it also has a number of "what-if's" built into it as well.
