BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana State Police have arrested a man they said tried to run over a trooper with a truck early Friday morning, forcing the trooper to fire his weapon at the vehicle.
The suspect is Jakarta Jones, 35, of Baton Rouge. He is wanted for attempted murder of a state trooper.
Capt. Doug Cain with LSP said the trooper was not injured.
According to authorities, a trooper patrolling College Drive in Baton Rouge saw a red truck erratically pull out of the parking lot of the Vallero gas station around 2:15 a.m.
Officials said the trooper turned on his lights to pull over the driver, but the truck kept going.
They reported the driver turned onto Bawell Street and tried to lose the trooper in the Valley Park neighborhood.
The truck ended up in a grassy field off Wells Street and spun out 180 degrees.
The trooper got out of his unit and started walking toward the truck to talk to the driver.
Authorities said the driver then hit the gas and drove right at the trooper.
The trooper pulled his gun and fired at the truck. The truck passed by the trooper without hitting him. Investigators later discovered two bullet holes in the side of the truck.
The truck was found at a nearby apartment complex on Balis Drive shortly after the shooting. Jones got away but was arrested just after 10:30 a.m.
A female passenger in the truck was taken into custody for questioning as to her involvement in the pursuit.
Her name was not released.
The investigation is ongoing.
