Severe storms blow away rooftops, knock down trees

PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

The severe storms that moved through southeast Louisiana Wednesday morning caused lots of damage in Ascension Parish.

The Prairieville area was especially hard hit by the line of thunderstorms that passed there.

Residents said a small tornado just missed Prairieville Middle School, which was crowded full of children at the time. A power outage at the school forced it to close at noon.

Many people reported downed power lines and trees in the area. Such damage was seen on Oakleigh Street in the Silverstone Subdivision off LA 73. There were even reports of rooftops getting blown away in some parts.

In addition to Silverstone, parish officials reported damage in several areas of the parish. They are listed below:

  • LA 930 at Balmoral Street
  • LA 930 at Henry Street
  • LA 930 at Daigle Road
  • Park Brook Street in Southwood Village Subdivision off LA 73

Officials also reported road closures, including:

  • West Lane
  • LA 930 at LA 42
  • Parker Road at Akins Road
  • LA 427 at Plantation Court
  • Bluff Road at LA 427
