FEMA dictates new Livingston flood maps

WALKER, LA (WAFB) - In about two weeks, new flood maps for Livingston Parish go into effect, which is why the municipal building in Walker was packed Monday night.

The updated flood zone maps put some people in flood zones. Others, however, have been completely taken out of the zones.

"FEMA dictates the flood zone and what's not in the flood zone, and they leave us pretty much out of the equation so there's nothing I can overturn. My hands are tied," said Walker Mayor Bobby Font.

Because of recent floods and improved technology since Livingston's last updated map in 2001, FEMA is coming up with new maps.

But Mayor Font says the locals know best which areas flood and they should have a say because long-term, the new maps could affect the housing in the city, especially since people are now making their decisions based on this.

"It will affect us. We don't know how strong that effect will be until the dust settles," said Font.

The maps for Livingston go in effect April 3rd, which is the same day as East Feliciana Parish.

Other parishes who are also in the process of updating their maps include St. Helena, West Baton Rouge and Iberville.
