LAFAYETTE, LA (AP) - The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's track team traveled to Lafayette Saturday to compete in the annual Louisiana Classics. The meet was held at the Raging' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
Harley Augustine kicked off the Louisiana Classics with the women's heptathlon on Thursday and Friday. The freshman competed in the 100m hurdles (18.60), high jump (1.46m), shot put (8.70m), 200m dash (28.69), long jump (4.34m), javelin throw (foul), and 800m run (2:50.54). Augustine finished sixth in the standings with 2,873 points.
Junior standout Sarah Tortorich led the team in the short distance events.
Tortorich clocked a time of 26.20 in the 200m and set a new school record in the 400m with 58.71. This is the third straight year she has broken the record in the 400m run.
Denise Powell led in the 800m and 1500m races with times of 2:32.78 and 5:19.29 respectively, while Vanessa Righeimer led in the 5000m run with a time of 19:36.56.
Lauren Fincher and Alexandra Lain capped off the women's events with the 400m hurdles and triple jump respectively. Fincher finished with a time of 1:10.46, while Lain recorded a distance of 10.16m.
On the men's side, Claude Nelson improved on his 100m time from a week ago by setting a new personal best. Nelson clocked in at 11.22, beating his former time of 11.39.
William Maye made his track debut today, accomplishing a time of 57.39 in the 400m run.
Michael Corso led the men's squad in the 5000m race. The freshman recorded a time of 16:53.08.
Finally, Carlos Flores competed in the shot put and discus throw events.Flores achieved distances of 8.60m and 26.76m respectively.
