BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana Department of Revenue is asking taxpayers to be patient when you have to call the department.
During the filing season, the department is averaging 55,000 phone calls a month. That's up from the normal of 35,000 during non-filing season.
9 News called the department 21 times Friday morning. The lines were busy 20 times. When we did get through, it was another 18 minutes before we actually talked to someone.
"We have 66 people answering the phones up there," says Gary Matherne, Undersecretary of the Department of Revenue. "Temps are not an option because state law says only qualified people can have access to tax records."
Matherne says help is on the way.
"We hope to have our system upgraded by the end of the year. So we'll be ready next year."
Matherne asks that tax filers who want to check their status go to the Department of Revenue's website.
