BELLE ROSE, LA (WAFB) - A Port Allen man and his uncle have been arrested for allegedly doing unwanted work on an elderly man's house, then demanding money from him.
Detectives say Joseph Cooper, 29, offered his services as a painter to the victim. When the victim told Cooper he didn't need any painting done, Cooper allegedly sprayed the roof of the victim's shed and house, then told him he owed him $5,000 for the job.
According to reports, a short time later, Cooper threatened to put a lien against the victim's home unless he paid up.
Investigators say the elderly man ended up paying over $10,000 to Joseph Cooper and his uncle, Karl Cooper, 43.
Joseph Cooper has been charged with extortion and three counts of theft of assets from an aged person. He is in the Assumption Parish Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
Karl Cooper is out on $10,000 bond. He has been charged with theft of assets of an aged person.
