The following is a news release from the Louisiana State Police:
On February 20, 2012, shortly after 2:00 a.m., officers with the Sulphur Police Department observed traffic violations and stopped a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Zachry Wayne Parker of Sulphur. Officers determined Parker was impaired and that children were present in the vehicle. Parker was charged by the Sulphur Police Department with DWI, child endangerment, improper lane use, and careless operation.
Later today, around 4:30 this afternoon, troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 171 at Louisiana Highway 378 in Moss Bluff involving Parker. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Investigating troopers determined Parker caused the crash, was impaired, and that he had a 3-year-old and a four-year-old child with him at the time of the crash. Troopers charged Parker with DWI with child endangerment, driving under suspension, and careless operation. Parker was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center.
A female passenger in the vehicle Parker was driving, 24-year-old Bobbi Jo Vanderziel of Sulphur, claimed to be driving at the time of the crash. Investigating troopers determined this was not true and charged Vanderziel with interfering with the duties of a state trooper.
Last year, Louisiana State Police Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. An impaired driver was responsible for half of the deaths in those crashes. Impaired individuals should never get behind the wheel and certainly should never drive with children in the vehicle.
Law enforcement agencies throughout our state, including the Louisiana State Police, will remain vigilant looking for impaired drivers through the remainder of the Mardi Gras holiday. Motorists who observe impaired or otherwise unsafe drivers are encouraged to notify State Police by dialing *LSP (*577) on their cell phone or by dialing 911 to contact their local law enforcement agency.
