Pedestrian struck and killed in Ascension Parish

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian, early Saturday morning at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Troopers' investigation states a 2012 Volvo Tractor was traveling west on LA 30 near Ashland Road when 32-year-old Christian Salinas of Houston stepped into its path.

Ascension Parish Coroner's Office pronounced Salinas dead on the scene.

Reports state that the driver, Aaron Dunbar, saw Salinas step into his path but was unable to avoid striking him. Dunbar, 41, brought his vehicle to an immediate stop and notified authorities of the crash.

Troopers suspect alcohol to have been a factor for Salinas and have submitted a sample of his blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. However, Dunbar voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers which showed he had no detectable alcohol in his system.

This is the third fatal crash involving a pedestrian that has occurred in the Troop A area in less than a week.

Louisiana law requires pedestrians to walk only on the left side of the highway or the shoulder facing oncoming traffic.  Pedestrians only have the right away when walking in a crosswalk. In all other situations they are required to yield to vehicles.
