BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Officials said a pot left unattended on the stove caused a fire that destroyed an apartment early Thursday morning.

The St. George Fire Protection District said the blaze sparked at Plantation II Apartments around 1:30 a.m.

The two-story four-plex units are located in the 1300 block of Jade Avenue in the Gardere area.

Firefighters said they arrived on the scene to find flames shooting out of the downstairs and upstairs windows.

The two people living there made it out safely.

The fire virtually gutted the apartment, but firemen were able to keep it from spreading to other units.

The Red Cross was called out to help the victims.

Units from the Baton Rouge Fire Department also responded to the fire.
