Metro council votes on shot spotters

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Council members voted Wednesday to extend a contract on parish shot spotters, and to wait two more weeks to decide about crime cameras.

The shot spotter contract was approved for one year at a cost of $182,000.

Crime cameras drew more discussion, as some council members say they need to be hidden better.

"It's gonna be difficult to catch a guy who's shooting around the corner if he can shoot your cameras out. So those are the concerns I've had," said Ulysses Addison. "It's not just the extension of the contract, it's the effectiveness of the program."

There are 122 cameras in the parish and 147 shot spotters.

"If the crime cameras are your eyes and the shot spotters are your ears and that's really how you know where the shots are coming from and how many shots were fired," said Trae Welch.

Crime cameras are set up around the parish, with hopes to catch violent acts on tape.  Shot spotters are sound-activated devices that pick up on gunshots.

The council will vote on whether to extend the camera contract in two weeks, at a cost of $65,000 for three months.
