BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A second suspect was taken into custody on attempted murder charges in the shooting that left a Baton Rouge councilman's son badly wounded.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said Terrance Thornton, 18, was arrested Tuesday night.
Thompson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of attempted armed robbery and possession of marijuana.
Detectives said he was charged with possession for having a marijuana cigarette on him when he was arrested.
Tyler Coleman, 16, was booked on attempted first-degree murder and three counts of attempted armed robbery Monday night.
A Baton Rouge Police detective testified in Juvenile Court that Thornton told police during questioning that he saw Coleman get into a car driven by Thomas Loupe's friend. Loupe was in the passenger's seat when Coleman allegedly demanded cash.
According to police, Loupe gave Coleman $85 and that's when Coleman allegedly fired two shots, one of which hit Loupe, paralyzing him.
Coleman's attorney, Bruce Craft, says the photo lineup used to identify Coleman is flawed and therefore isn't probable cause enough to hold his client.
"I don't know specifically in at this point in time that there were any. I simply brought that issue up to the court because I believe its entirely relevant," said Craft. "The only evidence at this point in time and I repeat, the only evidence that points toward my client as being involved in any way shape or form in the commission of this horrible crime is simply an eyewitness identification based on a photo lineup. It's entirely suspicious and suspect in its very nature."
Juvenile Judge Kathleen Ritchey disagreed, keeping Coleman in jail.
The shooting happened in the 1600 block of Mary Lou Drive on Friday around 5:45 p.m.
Loupe, son of Councilman Chandler Loupe, was shot in the chest while sitting in a car.
He celebrated his 16th birthday in the hospital on Sunday.
Authorities said three teens were "participating in an illegal activity."
There is word it was possibly a drug deal.
A 15-year-old boy was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center on a charge of attempted possession of marijuana.
Police said there was also a 17-year-old with the two 15-year-old boys. The 17-year-old was not charged.
Detectives said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
