Parents worried about former meth house

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

A house tarnished by meth and other drugs has people in an Ascension Parish neighborhood pressing their leaders for answers.

The house is less than a thousand feed from Dutchtown High School and a daycare.  Parents are worried their kids will get hurt from the possible poisons left on the property.

Kayla McNeely lives next door to a home that has been labeled a biohazard.  The young mother says she was shocked when sheriff's deputies showed up here.

"I was sitting outside when they drove up and went over there and started arresting people," said McNeely.

Investigators say Barry Gautreaux, Brandon Lombard, and David, Monica and Terrin Smith were all living in the home on Carrie Lane in Geismar.  When they searched the property, investigators say they found seven meth labs, prescription drugs and pot.  All five were charged with cooking meth and using drugs near a school.

"It's very disturbing they would be doing that over there," added McNeely.

Another mother, who didn't want to be identified, says her kids walk past the property several times each week.

"My daughters catch the bus down the street from here every morning by the daycare," she said.

The director of the Kaleidoscope Daycare declined an on-camera interview.  But she did say they have a policy in place and that parents are contacted immediately when something like this happens.

Their neighbors are still behind bars.  The house is marked "contaminated."  But people who live nearby say they want the mess left behind removed.

"I mean like, what are they doing with that house? Like, are they going to let people move back in there, or are they going to clean it?" asked McNeely.

Larry Douglas and his Xtreme Cleaners crew was called to the house to remove the products and tools used to make meth.  But he says no tests were done to detect for possible residue, which he says could still be present.

"There is certainly the possibility of exposure and other toxins in there. Unless they call us or the parish gets involved, it stays that way," said Douglas.

Spokesmen for the Ascension Parish Government and the Sheriff's Offices say they do not have a contract to clean up meth labs.  That is left up to the landowner.
