Teens: Carrying guns is our reality

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Over a 24 hour period in Baton Rouge, four people were shot and two of them died.

One of the shootings happened just before 1 a.m. Thursday morning on Central Rd. in north Baton Rouge.  Three were shot and one killed.  Earlier that night, a man was shot and killed on Calion Dr. in the Glen Oaks area.  The murder on Calion was the third person murdered in the Glen Oaks area this week.  All three were teens.

Dondary London says he didn't see what happened just steps from his front door, but it's a sound he says he'll never forget.

Everything happened so fast, ya know?" said London. "Next thing I was ducking down. I thought somebody was shooting at me."

His neighbor and friend, 19-year-old Ira Bennett, was the target.  Sheriff's detectives say Bennett was walking outside, not far from his house, when two men walked up, shot him and ran.

His uncle, Ronald Haynes, says Bennett, a Louisiana Technical College nursing student, was still dressed in scrubs.

"His body was still laying on the ground. It's so very hard for us. Pray with us," said Haynes.

It's been an especially hard week for people who live in the neighborhood.  On Tuesday, two other teens were gunned down less than a block away on Fairlane Ct.  The suspects in both shootings are still on the run.

"That means you gotta be protected at all times now because the police can't save you all the time. You gotta be able to save yourself," said London. "What do you have to do to protect yourself?" asked Cheryl Mercedes. "You gotta carry equipment yourself," he replied.

London says it's a tough reality.  It's one Glen Oaks Pastor George Guillory Jr. is fighting to change.

"It's time for community to step up and say no more," said Guillory.

Guillory believes the violence stems from a small group of people who are part of a pact that has darkened the doorsteps of the community.

"It's terrible. It's disheartening in the sense that there are good people here who want to live in peace and walk the streets without fear," he added.

Reverend Guillory says he has met with local, district and state leaders about how to tackle crime in Glen Oaks.  He says they plan on taking it to the streets soon.
