BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
The Southern Jaguars are three weeks into
the spring semester - the first semester they've had a four-day class week.
Back in October, Southern University
switched to a four-day school week. That means no more Friday classes for
students and staff. Chancellor James Llorens says it was something that's been
discussed for years, and recently the university decided it could be a way to
save money by cutting energy costs.
"At the end of the fiscal year we'll see
what our energy costs were and see if that did afford us a significant...we
believe there is a savings involved. It's hard to quantify right now," said
Llorens.
It's only been three weeks, but Llorens
says they already know what a shorter week means for students.
"It gives them the opportunity for more
study time and in some cases, it gives them the opportunity for more work hours
if they have part-time jobs," said Llorens.
However, some students aren't so sure.
"It's good in way, but you also have bad,"
said freshman Alvin Hutton. "You know classes are longer and they're more
stressful. Teachers put more work on you because you don't have class on
Friday, so they expect you to do more."
Others say the shorter week gives them the
best of both worlds; more social time and better, quality learning time.
"You have more time and it's not so
rushed," said junior Dominique Owens. "Because when we had three-day-a-week
classes, class was 50 minutes. Now we have like an hour and twenty so it's better."
The
university did not eliminate any classes when with the change.
