Flash flood watch issued for Baton Rouge area

A tornado watch for the Baton Rouge area expired, but the Nation Weather Service issued a flash flood watch that will be in effect until 6 a.m. More

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board zeroed in on one candidate for the next school superintendent by the end of a meeting Wednesday night. More

Leak causes I-10 ramp closures at Ramah

An 18-wheeler carrying a chemical that is highly corrosive and capable of eating away at asphalt leaked at the entrance ramp onto I-10 East at Ramah. More

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal is asking lawmakers to revamp the retirement program for thousands of state workers, to shrink their benefits, boost their costs and push back the age to collect benefits. Jindal says the proposals would rein in costs for systems that are nearly $19 billion short of the money they would need to be fully funded.

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - A jury has been chosen to hear the federal racketeering trial of former St. Gabriel Mayor George L. Grace. He faces several charges, including racketeering, extortion, mail fraud, wire fraud and bribery following an FBI sting operation. The trial resumes Thursday.

ALEXANDRIA, LA (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a 26-year-old former corrections officer at the U.S. Penitentiary at Pollock has pleaded guilty to attempted introduction of contraband into a prison. Prosecutors say Brandon R. Willis of Pineville was accused of providing tobacco, cellular phones and drugs to prison inmates in exchange for cash.

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - A judge has signed off on a court order that bars a man from operating a Baton Rouge cemetery without a license. The recent order signed restricts Lymus Washington or anyone working for him from operating Gilbert Memorial Park.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The New Orleans Hornets are leaving Oklahoma City with a ninth straight loss. The Hornets fell 101-91 to the Thunder on Wednesday night, despite forcing 21 turnovers. Jarrett Jack scored 20 points to lead New Orleans, while Gustavo Ayon added 16.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A person familiar with the situation says guard Eric Gordon has turned down a four-year extension offer from the New Orleans Hornets, meaning he'll become a restricted free agent after the season. Gordon came to New Orleans as part of a multiplayer trade shortly before the regular season that sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers.

STARKVILLE, MS (AP) - LSU has dropped to 2-4 in SEC play with a 76-71 loss on Wednesday at No. 18 Mississippi State. Andre Stringer led the Tigers with 17 points off the bench. LSU hit four 3-pointers late to pull within 72-71 with 12.9 seconds left, but could not grab the lead.

COCOA, FL (AP) - The four Republican presidential candidates take to the stage again tonight for their second Florida debate ahead of the state's primary next Tuesday. Public opinion polls have Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in a tight race, and the contenders have been pounding each other over personal and professional vulnerabilities.

STATE COLLEGE, PA (AP) - More than 12,000 people are expected to pack a Penn State arena for a tribute to Joe Paterno today. The former football coach died Sunday of lung cancer at age 85. Paterno was given the diagnosis just days after being forced out of his job in the wake of child sex-abuse charges against a former assistant.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. government still owns stakes in 458 companies helped in the financial bailout. The acting special inspector general for the bailout also says some of the nearly $133 billion that companies owe U.S. taxpayers will never be recovered.

SANTA FE, NM (AP) - An Associated Press investigation has found that dozens of the same addresses have been used repeatedly by foreign nationals to obtain driver's licenses in New Mexico. The investigation found that the scenario has been repeated since New Mexico changed its law to allow illegal immigrants to get the same driver's license as a U.S. citizen.

PARIS (AP) - French authorities have arrested the former head of a company that made faulty breast implants. Jean-Claude Mas ran the now-defunct Poly Implant Prothese company that authorities say used cheap, industrial-grade silicone instead of medical-grade gel. Tens of thousands of women worldwide got the implants.
