Report reveals problems with state infrastructure

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A report on Louisiana infrastructure released Wednesday by the American Society of Civil Engineers reveals some serious problems.

The team, made up of fifty engineers from the public and private sectors, spent 18 months analyzing and inspecting the state's aviation systems, bridges, dams, drinking water systems, levees, roads, ports, solid waste and wastewater facilities.

"They gave different weights to different components: capacity, condition, safety and sustainability and what current and future funding levels may be," said Project Director Dr. Kam Movassaghi.

The team found that a majority of the infrastructure around the state is in need of a lot of attention.

Movassaghi says one major problem faced by all of the state's infrastructure was the lack of funds.  For example, not enough money to maintain roads - which received the lowest grade, a "D."  Movassaghi says, as a result, local governments are being forced to use already scarce funds to repair roads on their own, such as Baton Rouge's Green Light Projects.

"That's kinda the future trend too that local governments are going to have to step up and help with the local road system," added Movassaghi.

Dams received the highest report card grade - a "B-."  The team says that's because most dams are privately owned and maintained.

Infrastructure Grade
Roads D
Bridges D+
Levees C-
Dams B-
Aviation C
Ports C-
Drinking Water D+
Solid Waste C+
Waste Water C-
