BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The LSU football team is 13-0 this year and considered a top five program since 2000, but there's more to come as a five-star quarterback has verbally committed to play for the Tigers.
Indiana native Gunner Kiel is the No. 1 rated pro-style quarterback in the country coming out of high school.
Zach Mettenberger has been projected by many as the quarterback for next season, with both Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee graduating this year.
Mettenberger looked impressive throwing the ball in the half he played against Northwestern State this season.
However, it will be interesting to see if Kiel could challenge Mettenberger for the job.
"If he comes down here, he can help us out for sure," said running back Spencer Ware. "And, he's going to have to come down here with it on his mind and be willing to put in the work. It's not just going to be handed to you."
Mike Scarborough of TigerBait.com calls the 6'4," 200-lb. player the highest rated QB prospect LSU has ever landed.
Kiel passed for 2,517 yards with 28 touchdowns and only four interceptions in 2011.
"It's going to be an adjustment," said wide receiver Reuben Randle. "But, I think if he's a great player, then it's going to be an easy transition for him."
Also, Kiel is a mid-semester graduate and plans to enroll for the spring semester and spring football at LSU.
