BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Nearly 1,000 people poured into St. Vincent de Paul on its 146th Christmas celebration in Baton Rouge on Sunday.
Turkey, stuffing and all the Christmas favorites filled 796 plates in a little less than two hours.
Executive Director Michael Acaldo says almost 150 volunteers helped serve food Christmas Day, including Mayor Kip Holden.
For years, it's been a tradition to hand out a gift to someone who comes to eat at the shelter, but the staff broke that tradition and opened up an entire store full of gifts this year.
"If you can take that Christmas spirit and you can bottle it up 365 days a year, we've done something great for our community and our world," Acaldo said.
Acaldo added the Christmas store far exceeded his expectations and it will be back again next year.
