Kids receive early visit from Santa

Posted: Updated:

More than 200 kids were given a chance to open their presents on Christmas Eve morning.

Everyone always wonders how Santa Claus delivers toys to every child in the world in one night. This year, he got started early and made a stop in the city of New Roads.

Santa's early arrival to south Louisiana meant bikes, dolls and all kinds of Christmas treats for hundreds of less fortunate kids who live in and around New Roads. But, Santa and Mrs. Claus had the help getting the toys. That help was from a special group of elves.

"It's called Elves for a Clause and it's a local charity organization that's been around for 34 years and they've given a lot of toys away to kids in the area," said Robert Myer.

Myer said one man from New Roads serves as the driving force behind the toy drive.

"Mr. Jim Moore has been doing this for 34 years and it's a wonderful organization and he's a wonderful man," Myer added.

He said Moore and the loving spirit of the people around Pointe Coupee Parish have helped this event become something everyone looks forward to, especially the kids.

"Some of these children would have never gotten a gift as large as this," said Roosevelt Gremillion.

The kids left with huge boxes, bikes and a picture with the Clauses. Gremillion hopes to see smiles from happy children for years to come.

"We continue to encourage the people of the Parish of Pointe Coupee, the city of New Roads to get involved. Don't just stand back and criticize. Get involved," he said.

Gremillion added he hopes more businesses donate to the cause next year, so more children can walk away with smiles on their faces and huge boxes in their hands.

This was just one of three toy drives the elves have done this month. Thanks to them, almost 1,800 kids will have gifts this Christmas.
