NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Stephen Hall scored 13 points and Jacksonville State defeated Southern University 55-50 on Saturday in the first meeting between the two schools.
The Gamecocks survived poor shooting by scoring 20 points off 20 Southern turnovers in the Skip Prosser Tournament. Jacksonville State (3-6), which snapped a four-game losing streak, shot only 29.8 percent (17 of 57) from the field.
Southern led 21-20 at halftime and built a 42-35 lead with 9:24 remaining before the Gamecocks began their comeback. The Gamecocks went on an 18-4 run, capped by two free throws by Darion Rackley,to grab a 53-46 lead with 44 seconds remaining in the game.
Tarvin Gaines added 12 points for the Gamecocks, whose past fivegames have been decided by eight points or less. Derick Beltran scored 20 points for Southern, who had its lowest point total since a 64-45 loss to Alabama A&M on Feb. 21, 2010.
