Mathieu awaits Heisman Trophy ceremony

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The most anticipated and talked about honor in college football, the Heisman Trophy, will be awarded Saturday night.

LSU standout Tyrann Mathieu will join four other phenomenal athletes for the presentation. He spoke about what the trip to New York has been like so far.

"I think it's a fun place to be and an extremely bright city," Mathieu said. "All of these lights out here, so it just seems like the people just never sleep. It's quite a good experience."

Mathieu, known as the "Honey Badger," has plenty of support in his corner as well, but he isn't expected to win. Only one other defensive player, Michigan's Charles Woodson in 1997, has taken home the Heisman.

Whatever happens, Mathieu's season will go down as one of the most special in the history of LSU football. He's already won the Bednarik Award for the nation's top defensive player and was also named the defensive player of the year in the ultra-competitive SEC.

The winner of this year's Heisman is hardly a slam dunk, as there appears to be no clear cut winner.

There is a spirited debate all around on who should be announced as the winner.

It appears Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is beginning to gain significant steam, but everyone will have to wait and see.
