Residents of East Baton Rouge Parish may soon add a new verb to their vocabulary - "geek." The East Baton Rouge Parish Library recently launched Geek the Library, a community‐based public awareness campaign. The campaign highlights what people are passionate about and how libraries can support them, in an effort to heighten awareness about the role libraries continue to play in today's society. BIRMINGHAM, AL (AP) - LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne has been named the SEC defensive player of the year by the league's coaches, while Les Miles was named coach of the year by his peers. Miles has led the top-ranked Tigers into the national championship game against Alabama.

METAIRIE, LA (AP) - There is a chance New Orleans Saints leading rusher Mark Ingram will miss this weekend's game against the Tennessee Titans because of a sprained toe on his left foot. Ingram rushed for 54 yards on 16 carries, including a 14-yard touchdown, against Detroit last Sunday night, but hurt his toe during the game.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Hornets have sold 10,000 season tickets, a threshold they see as important to luring new ownership that is committed to keeping the NBA club in Louisiana. The Hornets have scheduled an announcement about ticket sales for the upcoming season on Thursday.

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - Lawmakers are backing a new job evaluation system for state employees, a revamp that is under consideration for use starting in 2013. The House and Senate governmental affairs committees agreed Wednesday to the proposal from the Department of Civil Service that would rework the job evaluation rules.

CHICAGO (AP) - Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has 71 days before he has to report to a federal prison to begin serving his sentence. Blagojevich, who was convicted of trying to sell President Barack Obama's old Senate seat, was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison for corruption.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Rescuers in Las Vegas will start the recovery process this morning for the five people killed when a sightseeing helicopter crashed into a mountainside yesterday. The pilot was taking the four passengers on a tour of the Las Vegas Strip and Hoover dam.

CANTON, GA (AP) - Authorities say the suspect in the abduction and murder of a 7-year-old suburban Atlanta girl is a maintenance man with no known criminal past. Ryan Brunn, who lives in the same apartment complex as the girl, is accused of sexually assaulting and killing her, and then dumping her body in a trash compactor bin.

TOKYO (AP) - The Guinness World Records' oldest dog has died. Pusuke, a fluffy tan Shiba mix who lived in Japan, has died at the age of 26 years and eight months. Her owner says the dog died Monday after suddenly falling ill and refusing to eat.
