BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A man accused of breaking into a vending machine faces felony charges after allegedly fighting with officers and taking a baton from one of them early Tuesday morning.

The LSU Police Department said John Ford Reed Jr., 40, broke into a machine at the Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex on the campus around 12:25 a.m.

Officers said when they arrived on the scene the suspect ran away and they went after him.

Investigators reported they caught up to him and he began fighting with them.

Reed allegedly tried to take an officer's gun but was stopped.

However, he reportedly did get his hands on the officer's expandable baton and tried to hit him with it.

Authorities said Reed took off running again and also fought with them again, but he was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

Paramedics treated one officer at the LSU police station for minor injuries.

Reed was taken to Baton Rouge General-Mid City with minor injuries.

He was released and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

He was charged with aggravated burglary, disarming a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, carrying a concealed weapon by a convicted felon, aggravated assault and criminal damage to a coin-operated device.

Bond information was not released by authorities.
