BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
There were some interesting races decided Saturday, but voters were distracted. Based on voting totals, turnout at the polls appeared to be low.
The race for Livingston Parish president was a hotly contested one. In the end, voters decided to go with new leadership. Layton Ricks defeated incumbent Mike Grimmer.
Voters in Port Allen chose new leadership for their city. Roger Bergeron, the president of the West Baton Rouge Parish Council defeated Deedy Slaughter by only 17 votes, unofficially. Former Mayor Derek Lewis resigned earlier this year shortly before pleading guilty to federal charges in Operation Blighted Officials.
Sheriff Talmadge Bunch of East Feliciana Parish was re-elected in the runoff election. He defeated challenger Joel Odom.
Another hotly contested race was for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in district 6. Incumbent Charles Roemer defeated Donald Songy to retain his seat. Gov. Bobby Jindal got heavily involved in BESE races. He wants enough votes to get his choice for filling the state education superintendent spot.
Alfred Williams, the former assistant to Mayor Kip Holden, was elected the state representative for district 61. He beat out C. Denise Marcelle, a Metro councilwoman.
