KENTWOOD, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a wanted fugitive on the run fired shots at searchers and actually hit a police dog in the process.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said K9 Officer Titan was wounded, but is alive and being treated.

Investigators are searching for Kaunda Magee, 36, described as a violent rapist.

Crews are currently searching the Kentwood area for Magee.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards said there were reported sightings in Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.

He also said several homes were broken into near the search area Tuesday, so his office is exhausting all resources to keep the community safe.

He asks that people keep their doors locked at all times and be mindful of what's around them.

He added they should report any suspicious activity.

Deputies said Magee broke into a home in Pine, LA and sexually assaulted someone.

When law enforcement agents there tried to arrest him, Magee allegedly shot at them.

Law enforcement agents in Washington and Tangipahoa parishes are searching for Magee.
