BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The man who owns the store where a 34-year-old woman was shot Tuesday night said she and her husband had a history of domestic violence.

Dario Galvan, the owner of Market Plus Cafe on West Muriel Avenue in Baton Rouge, said he has known the victim for years. He called her Claudia. Investigators have not released her name, but said she underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

"It happened too fast," Galvan said. "It was like 8:00 at night. He walks in from the back door in the kitchen, he shoots her three times and runs away, just like that. Like - few seconds that's it."

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Calixto Aleman shot his wife inside the Market Plus Cafe on West Muriel Drive in Baton Rouge just before 8 p.m.

Galvan said he called police while another man in the store followed the suspect to the Chase Bank around the corner from the store. Officers arrested Aleman near the bank.

Authorities said Aleman confessed and was charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder because there were two other people in the kitchen during the shooting.

Cpl. L'Jean McKneely with BRPD advises those in abusive relationships to not feel embarrassed and make sure to tell someone.

"I recommend that they would talk about it for number one," he explained. "Make people aware of what's going on. By doing that, that puts everyone on alert, so if they see that particular individual around, they can try to call the authorities as quickly as possible."

Galvan was aware of his employee's abusive relationship and was able to react quickly, which possibly saved her and his customers.
