STATE NEWS

GREEN BAY, WI (AP) - The New Orleans Saints are 0-1 on the season, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Drew Brees threw for 419 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-34 loss to the Green Bay Packers, but the game ended with Green Bay making a goal-line stand on the final play of the game.

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - LSU officials say suspended receiver Russell Shepard will be eligible to return for the Tigers' fourth game of the season at West Virginia. BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - The lawyer for suspended LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson has filed a motion seeking the return of property that police took from the player's apartment during the investigation of a bar fight that led to Jefferson's arrest. Police eventually took nearly 50 pairs of Jefferson's shoes.

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - LSU's Michael Ford says he began to make his greatest strides as a running back when he stopped trying to play like he was the best athlete on the field. In last weekend's season-opening victory over Oregon, Ford ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL NEWS

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials say they have the first tip of an "active plot" to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Officials say they are investigating a credible but unconfirmed threat that al-Qaida was planning to use a car bomb to target bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Economists have offered mainly positive reviews of President Barack Obama's $450 billion plan to stimulate job creation. Some predicted it would put hundreds of thousands of people back to work next year, mainly because a Social Security tax cut for workers would be deepened and extended to small businesses.

MONTPELIER, VT (AP) - The flooding in the Northeast from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Irene is more than a threat to individual property and lives. What's left is a potential public health threat tainted with sewage and other toxins. It could happen through direct exposure or the contamination of private water wells.

MOSCOW (AP) - Russian air accident investigators say they are examining flight recorder boxes from a deadly plane crash the killed a top ice hockey team. The team was among the 43 people who died. Officials say the tapes are wet and they'll wait for them to dry before trying to decipher them.
