(FOX19) - This Labor Day a number of speeches were made rallying Union workers.
One of the biggest speeches was made right here in Cincinnati by Vice President Joe Biden. The Vice President talked about the importance of the labor movement and rallied voters, none of which is a big deal.
But in the midst of that speech, the Vice President said this:
"This is a fight for the heart and soul of the labor movement. This is a fight for our very right to exist. Don't misunderstand what this is. Not a joke, not a joke. Not an applause line. You are the only folks keeping the barbarians at the gates. You are the only non-governmental power, the only non-governmental power. The only one that has the power and capacity to stop this onslaught." said Biden at the AFL-CIO picnic.
That statement by the Vice President is filled with imagery, but doesn't make a lot of sense. Who are the "barbarians at the gates"?
Is Biden is talking about lawmakers like Governor John Kasich who signed Senate Bill 5 into law, limiting the collective bargaining rights of public employees?
Is he talking about the "Tea Party" because they seem to have an issue with public funded pensions that many people are too large?
On the same day that Vice President Biden talked about the "barbarians at the gates" Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa Jr. said this in Michigan while warming up a crowd for President Obama.
"We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: the war on workers. and you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. and you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. the one thing about working people is we like a good fight. " said Hoffa.
Listening to those statements, it sounds like the "war" on workers is being waged by the Tea Party?
Workers against the Tea Party though doesn't make sense. Largely because the term workers can't just be used for Union members.
In the 1950's about one-third of the U.S. workforce was unionized.
Today, only 12 percent is unionized and that number in the private sector is even lower, only 7 percent.
During his speech, Hoffa continued, "President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong,"
Here's what you need to know.
This kind of rhetoric is done on both sides. So before the emails come in, I understand that. But its time to call it out, and this program will.
If you come across it, I don't care who the politician or leader is, Union, Tea Party, whoever, send the video or link to me and I'm going to point it out.
Just like last week, when I took on Republican Congressman Steve Chabot over seizing those cameras What has happened in our country is everyone is fighting a convenient, nameless, faceless enemy.
Terms like "barbarians at the gates" aren't used simply for symbolism. They are used because it allows politicians to fight a very generic enemy without actually talking about real specific issues.
That's what the American people need, real answers to real problems with this economy.
