Bonnie's Special String Beans

1 28-oz. can green beans
1/2 stick butter
1/2 stick margarine
1 medium onion,finely chopped
2 Tbl. brown sugar
3 Tbl. white vermouth (can use very dry white wine)
1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted

Rinse beans and drain very well in colander. Melt butter and margarine in heavy pot and saute' onion. Stir in brown sugar until dissolved. Stir in vermouth to blend and cook until slightly thickened. Add beans and toss through to heat and coat well. Sprinkle with toasted almond slivers prior to serving. This is a family favorite!
