LA's Nutria Season Opens Nov. 20th

(Baton Rouge-AP) -- Trappers wishing to take part in Louisiana's nutria control program can now submit applications for this year's season, which begins November 20th and lasts through March 31st. The state pays four dollars for each nutria tail brought to coastal collection stations. Last year, a total of 308,160 tails were turned in.

Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officials say trappers involved with the program last year must reapply this year. Because the web-footed, rat-like creatures destroy valuable coastal marsh areas, the state wants to eliminate up to 400,000 of the critters this year. A valid trapping license is required to register for the program, along with a completed nutria application and permission from a landowner or land manager for trapping.
