DARROW, LA (WAFB) -

A murder has rocked an Ascension Parish neighborhood. Darren Smylie came home to find his 19-year-old son dead on Venus Avenue in Darrow.

When tragedy strikes people get curious, especially when it happens steps from their own front doors. That was the case on Venus Avenue Monday night.

A heartbroken mother was comforted by relatives and friends. A father, still in shock, waited anxiously on detectives for an answer that could explain the events that changed his life forever.

"When I came home from work I saw the door open and I pushed it open some more and my son was on the floor full of blood," Darren Smylie said.

Smylie said his son, Darren Smylie, Junior, or D.J. as he called him, appeared to have been stabbed to death in the kitchen. He said he did not know what to do, so he ran to his sister, Eva.

"It is devastating to us, very devastating. A young man's life has been taken from him," Eva Smylie said.

Word spread fast. Relatives came together to console one another.

"It's so sad. I can't believe they killed my nephew, killed my nephew, so sad, so young," Lori Butler said.

They all watched as Ascension Parish Sheriff's detectives surrounded the house, looking for clues that could lead them to Smylie's killer.

"This is their time to do their job because we are going to make sure it gets done," Eva Smylie said.

Darren said he is still trying to take it all in.

"Extremely difficult, stressful," Darren Smylie said.

Relatives believe the murder may have been over a girl. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office has not released a motive or cause of death.
