Early tornados hit Tuscaloosa, Jefferson Counties

Posted: Updated:

At 5:17 a.m. an EF-3 tornado with winds of up to 155 miles per hour touched down at 11042 Staghorne Drive in Coaling in Tuscaloosa County. The twister traveled for 18.3 miles and lost strength near 7400 Old Tuscaloosa Hwy in McCalla in Jefferson County.

Wednesday afternoon, Fox 6 reported that two trees fell on University Boulevard on the University of Alabama campus, both blocking roadways. Downed trees and damage was reported in the towns of Buhl, Samantha, Coalville and Duncanville.

In Vance, high winds damaged the Mercedes-Benz plant, and a tractor trailer at the entrance of the plant was pushed to its side. In the Magnolia Springs area of Vance, five houses were destroyed.

In McCalla, several trees were downed. Several homes in the Woodland Lake Subdivision received damage from falling trees.

After this early round of storms, Alabama Power reported that about 245,000 businesses and home were without electricity.

This was the third time West Alabama had been hit by severe weather in the past month, however, it was only a hint of what was to come later that day, when an EF-4 tornado traveled for 80 miles, destroying nearly everything in its path.
