It was an impressive show of unity this week as Gov. Bobby Jindal and representatives from state, local and federal law enforcement agencies unveiled the "Criminal Hot Spot Initiative."
The East Baton Rouge Parish Violent Crime Unit will now be housed in the Louisiana State Police building. The move is significant because it gives law enforcement more weapons in the fight against crime.
It allows them to share technology, resources and manpower. It also couldn't come at a better time. An FBI crime report released last May ranked Baton Rouge fifth in the country for murders per capita.
That's why East Baton Rouge Parish is a good location to launch this new initiative. If it works, it can be duplicated in other areas. Being first to get results with this new approach is the kind of ranking that would benefit all of us.
