TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A well known broadcast personality in Tangipahoa was stabbed and killed in his Ponchatoula home late Friday night. Deputies are on the hunt for Eric Maurer, 31. Detectives believe he robbed and brutally killed Rube Rogers, a former Tangipahoa Police Juror.
On a country road in Ponchatoula hidden behind a barb wire fence, covered with crime scene tape is a place one man called paradise. It's the home of Rube Rogers, a man some would call a legend in his own right.
"You can't name a star in the 60's he didn't bring to Ponchatoula," said long time friend, Ken Benitez.
Deputies believe Rogers, a well known broadcast personality at 65 years old was stabbed to death by Maurer. Deputies say Maurer robbed and brutally killed Rogers, the man who raised him since his teenage years.
In one of Rogers' favorite hang outs, "Shorty's" in Hammond, Benitez spoke about the man Rogers was, and the twins he tried to help. Benitez says Maurer has a twin brother. Both of them were taken in by Rogers who was not their father, but tried to be one.
Clutching a napkin wet with tears, Benitez was visibly shaken, still unable to grasp the reality that his friend of 35 years, is gone.
"When you say that someone would give the shirt off his back that's a cliché," said Benitez. "But Rube, he did that."
Pieces of broken glass still line the doorway into Rogers' home, a place described as peaceful. Its silence was shattered by what deputies call a gruesome murder.
Detectives are asking for your help. If you have any information regarding Maurer's whereabouts call the Tangipahoa Sheriff's office at 985.902.2088 or Crime Stoppers at 800.554.5245.
