BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Greg Phares with the state Inspector General's office confirmed the agency was asked to initiate an investigation at the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control.
Phares said the Inspector General's office has asked state police to assist them. The state police data base is believed to be linked to the investigation. Alcohol and Tobacco Control Commissioner Murphy Painter resigned on Friday, reportedly forced out of office.
Sources said Painter and his office are accused of doing illegal criminal background checks.
Phares said, Brant Thompson, who is serving as interim commissioner is cooperating with the investigation. Lt. Sasha Hyderkhan with ATC released a statement Sunday afternoon.
"We will not allow this matter to interfere with, or interrupt, in any way the services our agency provides to the citizens of this state," the statement read. "We have committed the full resources of ATC's investigative unit to assist in any way needed."
He added the ATC will not release any further statements until the investigation is complete.
