As summer vacation comes to an end for our kids, our break from driving quickly through school zones is also over. Just as we prepare our children to return to class with new backpacks, uniforms and school supplies, as motorists we also have to prepare ourselves.

As you drive your neighborhood and city streets, start noticing where the school zones are.    Remember, once school opens, you'll need to reduce your speed to 20 miles an hour between the hours of 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The 20-mile an hour speed limit is strictly enforced.

However, it's a good idea to slow down and be extra cautious any time of day. With bus drivers handling multiple routes, some children are at bus stops before daylight. Other students get to school early or stay late for extra curricular activities.

We should always practice safe, defensive driving, but it's more important than ever now as the summer break comes to an end for all of us.
