Commission to study criminal sentencing

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The question of why Louisiana sends more people to prison than any other state in the nation is being studied by a panel of judges, attorneys and law enforcement officials.

Currently, 40,000 inmates are held in state and local prisons and jails. The Louisiana Sentencing Commission is scheduled to meet in August to discuss the issue.  The panel wants research and recommendations ready for the next legislative session.

A new law calls for the panel to review sentencing practices, probation and parole supervision and alternatives to incarceration.
