Jury convicts man in killings of young couple

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A jury has convicted a man of second-degree murder in the deaths of a New Orleans couple kidnapped for ransom and then killed in an abandoned house.

The Times Picayune said Gregory Vincent Jr. was found guilty Friday even though nothing indicates that he fired the revolver used to kill Southern University at New Orleans student Fitzgerald Phillips or his girlfriend, Calyisse Perkins. Both victims were 19.

The 34-year-old Vincent refused to testify against his cousin and accused gunman, 24-year-old Kenneth Barnes, and Layman Foster, a third man linked to the crime. A defendant need not wield the weapon to be found guilty in a killing.

Vincent faces a mandatory life prison term when sentenced on June 30.
