BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - For the third year in a row, a bill to ban cell phone use in cars on Louisiana roadways has passed out of the House Transportation Committee.
In the past, cell phone bills like this one never made it very far. They typically run into serious obstacles when they reach the House floor.
Two similar bills passed out of committee Tuesday morning. They prohibit drivers from using handheld cell phones in a moving car. They can still talk on the phone if a hands-free device, such as a Bluetooth or other wireless means, is used.
Lawmakers have long warned the state will lose millions in federal highway dollars if they do not adopt this law.
On the Senate side, a bill to allow gay couples to adopt a child collectively was shot down in committee.
There will be more information given on the issue at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
