Court OKs Edwards' Resignation from Practice of Law

(New Orleans-AP) -- Imprisoned former Governor Edwin Edwards has resigned from the practice of law rather than face discipline from the state Supreme Court.

The high court has approved Edwards' requested resignation, which means Edwards is permanently barred from practicing law or seeking readmission to the legal profession in Louisiana or elsewhere.

The 75-year-old Edwards entered a federal prison in Texas last year to begin his 10-year sentence for extorting money from applicants for riverboat casino licenses.

Edwards' law license was suspended in June 2000, a month after he was found guilty.
