COVINGTON, LA (AP) - Authorities say man suspected in the murder-for-hire scheme of an emergency medical technician escaped from the St. Tammany Parish Jail, triggering an intense manhunt to find him.
Capt. George Bonnett with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said hundreds of deputies and police officers were searching Sunday for Carlos Rodriguez, 39. He escaped Saturday night.
Rodriguez was awaiting trial in the slaying of Mario Scramuzza last year. The sheriff's office charged Rodriguez and two other men in the killing. Investigators believe it was orchestrated by Scramuzza's wife.
The victim was found beaten to death in his home last February.
